As technology continues to advance, particularly with the advent of 4G, 5G, and the widespread influence of social media, the world has come to expect content delivered to our devices in real time. Over the past decade, Present Communications witnessed a significant shift in electronic news gathering, where immediacy and authenticity took precedence over the traditional emphasis on video and broadcast quality.
More recently, the boundaries between broadcast, live events, and brand experiences have blurred, with campaigns taking on a more holistic approach across multiple mediums. Companies and brands have expanded their reach, becoming more active across all their touch points. Today, quality is once again a primary focus, but the expectation of real-time coverage has not diminished. Fortunately, advancements in technology have made this expectation a reality.
Furthermore, there is now greater awareness of the impact of our work—not just on our businesses, but also on the environment and the people around us. As we strive for quality and immediacy, we also consider sustainability and responsibility.


We had the privilege of supporting the Labour Party’s recent election campaign as part of their event delivery partner Broadsword, focusing primarily on the South of England. Given the extremely short notice of campaign events, with appearances and announcements organised within tight timelines, full broadcast facilities were required for major news channels such as BBC and ITN, alongside social media streaming. We provided video, audio, lighting, and staging at various locations, often with as little as four hours’ notice.
During Keir Starmer’s campaign at Northampton Town FC’s Sixfields Stadium, we delivered all necessary event infrastructure within 48 hours—over a weekend—without the possibility of conducting a site visit. We anticipated the absence of internet and power on site, meaning our solution had to be adaptable. The event was broadcast not only to major news outlets but also through Labour’s social channels.

Streaming was facilitated using the latest Peplink SpeedFusion technology, combined with Starlink low-orbit satellites. This integration offered exceptional redundancy at a significantly lower cost compared to traditional KU Band satellite systems. Moreover, it allowed for quick setup times and required minimal space. We also utilized InstaGrid batteries, which enabled us to work in any location without the need for detailed site surveys, providing a sustainable power source.
The changes in technology over the past 20 years have allowed us to broadcast high-quality content at a fraction of the cost. This is possible in several ways:
- Broadcasting and Streaming via Public Networks: Dedicated fiber or satellite connectivity is no longer a necessity. Leveraging public networks has actually increased our resilience.
- Portable Equipment: The technology required to broadcast has become significantly more compact. Camera operators can now carry an encoder and modems in a backpack, eliminating the need for a tethered satellite truck.
- Battery Technology: The ability to power full audio, video, lighting, and broadcast services with batteries offers flexibility and resilience. Battery power is not just a backup option; it’s often the primary power source for event production.
- LED Lighting: With significantly reduced costs and lower power consumption, LED lighting can now illuminate a stage using battery power alone, enhancing flexibility.
These advancements mean we can deliver high-quality broadcasts using portable and sustainable technology, making real-time, high-quality coverage more accessible and affordable than ever before. From leveraging Peplink SpeedFusion with Starlink satellites to utilising InstaGrid batteries, we’ve embraced cutting-edge tools to bring millions of people in touch with local events and amplify voices around the world.
