As central London’s leading large events venue, the QEII Centre offers world-class facilities for high-profile conferences, conventions, exhibitions and corporate events with capacity for up to 2,500 delegates. More than 450 national and international events are hosted there each year.
In 2014, a £12 million capital investment programme began and the centre rebranded, seeking to re-establish its ‘wow-factor’, improve the visitor experience and upgrade its technology infrastructure. QEII has invested heavily in high-speed, next-generation technologies to future-proof the venue for years to come.
The refurbishments began in 2014, with luxury fixtures, discreet security and a QEII concierge combining to warm the welcome, while airport-style check-in desks to aid concurrent registration for events.
In 2015 the second stage of the renovations saw six weeks of interior and exterior improvements taking place. To further improve the customer experience, new static and digital signage systems were installed to aid wayfinding and showcase event branding. A new centre-wide lighting infrastructure was introduced, featuring new ceilings, dimmable halo lighting, strip lighting and LED colour changing uplighters.
The centre’s flagship conference room The Churchill was fitted with a LED star cloth and ceiling-mounted moving lights to add glamour and glitz to award ceremonies and parties. The renovated front canopy of the building was also given an injection of glamour, with colour customisable pin spot lighting added to the exterior colour washes already available.
QEII has responded to the demands of its tech-savvy clients and invested £500,000 in upgrading its AV facilities across the centre, with new additions including a quad-resolution video wall to provide more exciting branding opportunities for clients, an induction loop system for audio and high definition laser projection.
With the QEII Centre regularly attracting high profile and large scale technology conferences and events, connectivity is key. The centre has recently upgraded to AV Wave Two technology for its free-to-access WiFi at a cost of £50,000 and spent £80,000 on a fibre optic backbone and intelligent switching devices.
A new in-house IPTV system enables sound and vision to be relayed anywhere within the centre at minimum cost. This is particularly beneficial to event organisers hosting full centre takeover events, as it allows content from different plenaries to be streamed throughout the centre, giving delegates access to all of the content from the event.
QEII is able to offer live streaming to an external audience and filming to make content available for download, extending the lifetime of an event and allowing international companies to reach a worldwide audience.
The most recent improvements to the QEII Centre’s technology services include two new 12k laser projectors in the Churchill room, combined with an extended set and borderless screen; four new floating laser projectors; a new screen, AV booth and D&B audio system in the sixth-floor Mountbatten room and upgrades to the PA system on the third floor.
The QEII Centre offers its clients a wide variety of creative event solutions, supported by an in-house AV team which can offer a turnkey solution to any event. The centre also offers a digital services team which can offer 3D visuals, video editing, 2D and 3D animations, digital content creation including presentation design, social media engagement and management and bespoke app creation.
Thanks to the repositioning campaign and extensive refurbishment programme, the QEII Centre is attracting a broader spectrum of clients and events than ever before and is embracing its position as one of the UK’s top tech-friendly venues. The centre’s tech expertise is matched by its award-winning customer service, and the sophisticated and intelligent use of technology allows the venue to exceed client expectations with every event.
