The Historic Dockyard Chatham is one of Britain’s most significant historic settings and leading maritime heritage destinations. Spanning 80 acres and home to more than 100 buildings and structures, including 48 Scheduled Ancient Monuments, it offers an extraordinary backdrop for events of every kind.
At the heart of the Dockyard stands The Commissioner’s House & Gardens which has recently reopened as a remarkable venue in Kent following an extensive £3.8 million restoration. Built in 1704 for the Commissioner of the Royal Dockyard, this magnificent Georgian mansion is the oldest surviving naval residence of its kind in Britain. For more than 300 years, it has welcomed admirals, dignitaries and guests to gather, entertain and celebrate.
Today, that tradition continues in beautifully restored surroundings that combine historic grandeur with contemporary hospitality. From elegant weddings and milestone celebrations to private dinners, Christmas parties, corporate meetings and team away days, The Commissioner’s House provides an unforgettable place for bringing people together.
Inside, graceful period interiors and original architectural details create an atmosphere of relaxed elegance. Modern comforts and discreet state-of-the-art technology ensure meetings and events run seamlessly. Outside, the beautiful orangery and expansive landscaped gardens offer additional space to gather and make the occasion your own.
But The Commissioner’s House is just one part of the story.

Set within the wider landscape of The Historic Dockyard, it can be enjoyed as a private venue or combined with the Dockyard’s diverse collection of indoor and outdoor event spaces to create truly unique experiences.
From intimate meetings for six to large-scale conferences, exhibitions, parties and weddings for 200+, the possibilities are extensive. Each historic space offers its own distinctive character and can be hired individually or brought together as part of a bespoke package that includes first-class facilities and exquisite hospitality.
And the possibilities are anything but ordinary.
Host a conference in the deconsecrated Royal Dockyard Church. Welcome guests aboard Victorian Royal Navy warship HMS Gannet for a drinks reception or dinner. Bring a milestone celebration or private dining to life in The Commissioner’s House & Gardens. Stage an awards ceremony beneath the remarkable timbers of the covered Slips or launch a new product in the restored 19th-century naval ironworks No. 1 Smithery.

With such a wealth of spaces, experiences and settings to choose from, the dedicated events team work with organisers to create tailormade events from start to finish.
Behind the events operation is Chatham Historic Dockyard Trust, an independent charity responsible for the stewardship of the site. As the most complete and best-preserved dockyard of the Age of Sail in the world, The Historic Dockyard Chatham has a unique role to play in educating, preserving and bringing this internationally significant heritage site to life.
Every event held at The Dockyard contributes to that purpose, helping to sustain this extraordinary historic environment and keep its rich history alive for future generations to enjoy.
