Projection mapping is the art of transforming both static and dynamic objects into extraordinary display surfaces through advanced visual imaging. Mapping is a truly breath-taking medium which can be enjoyed across a broad spectrum of events from private celebrations to major public occasions.

This striking and highly visual medium provides a unique, far-reaching and lasting alternative to traditional forms of audience engagement and is growing ever more popular at events across the globe.

At The Colour Project, we provide end-to-end coordination of video mapping projects from the storyboard to content creation and eventual on-site technical delivery. We have had the privilege of illuminating some of the most iconic buildings and UNESCO World Heritage Sites such as Battersea Power Station, Marble Arch, The Bolshoi Theatre, and the Royal Liver Building to critical acclaim.

The first step in our process is the creation of a precision computer-generated 3D model of the building or object, this provides for the foundation for our visual artists to begin the bespoke creative phase. This is where the fun begins!

Using software such as Adobe After Effects and Autodesk 3DS Max narrative inspired pseudo-three-dimensional effects and characters are digitally crafted and moulded around the features and facets of the building. We create memorable soundtracks to underscore the visual elements including voiceovers and sound effects which provide emphasis to the unfolding story and support the narrative of the show.

Marks and Spencers projection projects

Once the creative content is polished and approved it goes to render… this process alone can often take days as the files are so large! Our focus then turns to on-site delivery; planning and managing all the required equipment, staffing and logistical support.

Once the team arrive on-site they set up a series of ultra-bright, ultra-high-resolution laser projectors and the associated control equipment for the show. Typically, we erect a series of temporary structures to ensure the correct height and angles for the projection creating the best possible visual illusions for the audience. Then the images are digitally sculptured and warped to the point where projectors are aligned, and the content is ultimately “mapped” to the architecture.

But what if you don’t have a building suitable for an audience to view? There are many other ways you can take advantage of this exceptional medium, for example, ‘Water Screens’

Imagine a 30m holographic effect water-screen emerging from the middle of a lake. An arc of fine water droplets hangs in the air to form a night-time canvas. Large-format projected imagery and animations appear like visual illusions suspended above the lake and reflect on its surface.

Our water-screens are ideally sited in any body of water, or specially created pools as required. The screens can be used in a stand-alone installation or combined with other show elements as required. Any project is created by carrying out full environmental surveys and producing original animations or bespoke video footage to then beam onto these utterly compelling canvases.

Whether projecting onto a building or water screen (or both!) we are the industry-leading experts at creating visual, awe-inspiring memorable moments for all audiences from weddings through to festivals and light show spectaculars with thousands of attendees. We ensure that your show will be engaging and entertaining whatever the scale.

Another way The Colour Project can get your message to the masses is via our Pop Up or “Guerrilla” projection technology.

This is an unrivalled mobile advertising tool that transforms buildings into large scale digital billboards. The technique has a proven history of being the perfect choice for impactful, high-interest out-of-home advertising. We work with you to identify locations that have heavy footfall and maximum viral-media potential.

At The Colour Project, we have a wealth of experience in this field and a vast portfolio of iconic sites around the world, we are perfectly positioned to tell compelling stories, reinforce brands and amaze audiences so don’t hesitate to get in touch.
