The 2019 carnival broke records in Rio de Janeiro. Officially closed last Sunday (03/10), with the last street parades, the revelry livened up locals and tourists and generated R$ 3.78 billion in revenue, 26% more than last year. The amount, released by Riotur, the city’s tourism entity, exceeded the National Confederation of Commerce of Goods, Services and Tourism’s initial forecast of R$ 2.1 billion in revenue.

Samba school and street parades also attracted more tourists to Rio in 2019. According to data released by Riotur, the flow of visitors reached 1.62 million, an 8% increase compared to 2018 when Rio welcomed 1.5 million tourists. The length of stay also increased, breaking another record: an average of 7 to 11 days. As a result, hotel occupancy reached 90.6%, according to the Brazilian Hotel Industry Association (ABIH), 3.6% higher than in 2018, when occupancy was 87%.

And those who landed in Rio for the Carnival approved the organization, the security and the information available. This is the result of a survey commissioned by Riotur, in a partnership with Escola Superior de Propaganda e Marketing (ESPM), which revealed a 98% satisfaction rate among tourists. The survey, conducted in different parts of the city, found that 98.4% of foreigners will recommend the city. This result is higher than the percentage obtained in 2018: 95%.
