Manchester has been successful in its bid to host the 14th European Sociological Association (ESA) conference.

Taking place from 20 – 23rd August 2019, the bi-annual conference will bring together more than 3,000 national and international sociologists, and others from related disciplines, to exchange research findings and ideas on the theme of ‘Europe and Beyond: Boundaries, Barriers and Belonging’.

The ESA conference was secured following a collaborative ‘Team Manchester’ approach between Manchester Metropolitan University (MMU), the University of Manchester (UoM) and Visit Manchester as well as Manchester Central – the city’s industry-leading convention centre.

ESA President, Professor Sue Scott, said: “We’re absolutely delighted to be bringing our bi-annual conference to Manchester in 2019 – a vibrant city with so much to offer that is of both historic and contemporary interest to our delegates.

“We’re extremely pleased to be working with both of the city’s universities as well as Manchester Central. The venue team has already been extremely helpful and welcoming and with a building steeped in so much history, it promises to be our most interesting venue yet!”

One of the largest international associations to ever choose the city, the conference will utilise 90% of Manchester Central’s versatile event spaces as well as holding sessions and events at both partner universities.

Shaun Hinds, CEO of Manchester Central, said: “As an industry-leading venue located in the heart of Manchester, we are passionate about continually developing the strong partnerships we have established across the city to attract even more fantastic international conferences to Manchester.

“Manchester Central’s unrivalled flexibility and firmly established reputation for hosting world-class events is a massive draw for international associations and we’re thrilled that the European Sociological Association has chosen to bring their 14th conference to the venue. We look forward to welcoming all delegates and exhibitors to the venue next year!”

Sheona Southern, Managing Director of Marketing Manchester, said: “We are pleased that Manchester has been chosen to host the 14th ESA conference, and it will be a real benefit to have world leading social scientists collaborating in our city.

“Manchester has always been a city of radical thinking, and with the strength of our universities and research facilities, the city continues to attract esteemed conferences who are drawn in by our excellent venues and inspiring history.”
