Åre 2019 partners with iZettle to bring cashless payments to 120,000 spectators. It is the first time in history that the FIS Alpine World Ski Championships are completely cashless. In partnership with official supplier iZettle, dozens of points of sale selling food, drinks and entry tickets will be accepting cashless payments exclusively through iZettle’s small-business commerce platform

Embracing a cashless trend that has earned Sweden global headlines, Åre 2019 will enable visitors to tap-to-pay conveniently and securely using contactless cards, phones or wearable technology – with the aim of cutting queues and allowing consumers to ski, snowboard and enjoy the championships without having to carry cash.

Sara Arildsson, Chief Operating Officer at iZettle, says, “Contributing to a cashless World Ski Championships in Europe’s most cashless country is fantastic, and a win-win for visitors and sellers alike.

“Together with Åre 2019’s event team we will ensure that vendors have the tools they need to get paid and sell smarter, whilst making paying as seamless as using a ski pass.”

Second only to the Olympic Winter Games in terms of size, the FIS Alpine World Ski Championships is set to attract 120,000 visitors from around the world. The event showcases how mobile payments can enable large-scale winter sports events and a world-class consumer experience even in remote locations.

Cecilia Hedenmark, CFO of Åre 2019, adds, “We want the FIS Alpine World Ski Championships in Åre 2019 to be a fantastic experience for our visitors, and to be cash free contributes to that.

“Åre 2019 wants to focus on the right things offering smooth solutions for payments and giving both visitors and co-workers a safe, cash free arena.”
