Our history

{10-11} Carlton House Terrace is comprised of two Georgian Townhouses located in the heart of Westminster. The building was constructed during the late 1820s and early 1830s on land previously occupied by Carlton House, the residence of the Prince Regent, who became George IV. The Roman Classical styled terrace was conceived by architect John Nash with two aims in mind: to provide good views of St James’s Park for residents and to provide an impressive backdrop to both the Royal Park and the Mall.

Number 10 was previously occupied by the Ridley Family of Northumberland and was once transformed into a hospital during First World War, and number 11 saw many residents including the Guinness family, and William Gladstone, four times Prime Minister who occasionally held Cabinet meetings here.

Our purpose

The adjoining properties are now home to The British Academy, the UK’s national body for the promotion of the humanities and social sciences.

The Academy aims to inspire, recognise and support excellence in its disciplines which include archaeology, psychology, law, linguistics, history and economics, as well as helping to shape policy and nurture curiosity.

Your canvas

{10-11} Carlton House Terrace boasts 10 event spaces across the two original townhouses, with contrasting entrances which provide a real ‘wow factor’ for guests on arrival.

The venue can offer exclusive hire of the whole building, entire floors, or private rooms which can accommodate dinners up to 100 guests, standing receptions up to 498 guests and conferences up to 125. Soaring ceilings, statement staircases and original fireplaces and other intricate architectural features provide a stellar back drop for a variety of events. You can take over the whole building for immersive brand experiences, hire individual spaces for AGM and intimate private dining. Alternatively, we have conference facilities with built in AV, incredible views and wonderful natural daylight for inspiring daytime meetings and conferences.

The in-house hospitality partners Searcys have been working with the venue for 7 years. Their passion for using the finest and freshest seasonal ingredients ensures a wealth of flavours and a profusion of colours for all dining options. Their exceptional levels of service and attention to detail ensure each event is treated with the utmost care.

Our future

In 2021, the Academy will begin a project to significantly enhance the facilities at {10-11} Carlton House Terrace, transforming existing basement space into an intellectual hub, complete with a 200+ seated auditorium with in-built AV facilities, exhibition and networking space, and a state-of-the-art media suite.
